The dowel is 1/4", purchased at Menards.  I'm pretty sure the knobs were from Hobby Lobby.

The piano wire is .032 (K&S stock #1602, for connecting the dowel to the switch paddle) and 3/64 (K&S #8161, for the throw, and to connect the throw to the switch paddle).
