Left side after second coat of paint, which was done using a technique similar to sponge painting after masking the appropriate hood doors. I used a piece of packing foam to dab small amounts of paint on, keeping a close eye on prototype photos to determine how much of the lettering should remain visible. The paint here was a mix of one part Floquil Light Green and about four parts UP Armour Yellow.

Right side after second coat. About five minutes after application, I went back with a paper towel dabbed in paint thinner to carefully remove it in spots on both sides where, on the prototype, the second coat has given way to the first. I avoided the decaled areas at this time. After it was completely dry, I went back with the edge of some very fine grit sandpaper and carefully removed the second coat from select areas of the lettering, again based on prototype photos below.

Left cab side with second set of engine numbers applied. First set, used on left side only, was 16" digits from Microscale 87-70-2, Railroad Gothic - Black. Smaller 7" digits were from Microscale 87-190, BN Diesels. Ink was scraped away on 7" digits to simulate the stencil the prototype used.

Done! Short hood end of completed unit. Weathering consisted of Floquil Grimy Black and Mud applied to the pilots, trucks, and fuel tank, as well as Pentel Oil Pastels to simulate the numerous scrapes and rust spots visible all over 303. This ex-C&O unit has had a long, hard life.

Left side of 303 after completion. Handrails were airbrushed Floquil UP Armour Yellow, then weathered with Grimy Black wash. Near the steps wells, the prototype's handrails are white, yellow, or bare steel, depending on where you look. I've tried to recreate that on the model.

Front right side. "F" on frame near step well is smaller than that on left side on the prototype, replaced after frame was repainted. Both are from Herald King PNC set, HK-111. Left side was from those "F"s supplied for this purpose, but smaller one on right side was from one of the "Fire Extinguisher Inside" decals.

Right side of long hood end. All paint has worn away from many parts of 303's handrails near the step wells, leaving shiny steel visible. I simulated this using a mix of equal parts Floquil Grimy Black and Old Silver.

Left side of long hood end. Blister from apparent engine fire was recreated with a variety of Pentel Oil Pastels, using purple, pink, lavender, brown, gray, and rust. Also visible in this photo are a couple of the hood door latches that were touched up on the prototype, as well as the traces of C&O blue that are showing through the green just below the engine room doors and below the radiator.

Note that the "W" is actually an "M" turned upside down, as per prototype. Portions of Precision lettering still visible underneath. Also visible in this view is the weld line on the cab roof, 18" back from the cab face, apparently from when the short hood was replaced. Roof was weathered with Floquil Grimy Black.
