On Saturday, 7/18/09, I set out to research and photograph the West End bridges I plan to model. With seven bridges to visit, I didn't think I'd have time for any chasing, but apparently the trains came to me for a change.
I set up a perfectly nice, dark-as-night, poorly-composed shot of the Valley View Dr. bridge in Council Bluffs, and this darn GE slips in and ruins it. ;-) BICB arrives Bluffs around 0745 behind 509-511-703, with the sun just peeking up over the trees behind me enough to at least cast some light on the power. Their train consisted of the empty rail flats, a huge batch of ethanol empties, a small cut of NRI and DSRC wheat empties, and pigs, including a few new Werner reefers. By: Joe Atkinson

Ah, EMDs. That's more like it. My first time catching the Rover in action, and my first time catching anything on the East Nishnabotna bridge in Atlantic. And to think I was just out to shoot bridges. :-) It was just after lunchtime, and as you can see from the shadows, I would have been better off on the south side of the bridge. These guys snuck up on me, though, and I felt blessed just to record them on the bridge at all.
I'm oftentimes blind to obvious details until I begin modeling something, and this bridge is no exception. I never noticed until recently that it was either a double-track span at one time or was at least built with the potential of handling a second track. Or maybe I knew and forgot again. Having just shoved empties up to Harlan Elevator, the Rover power stops on the main while the conductor relines the Atlantic spur switch. By: Joe Atkinson
