The first signs of a finished layout arrive as the skirting has been painted. By: James McNab

A black satin paint was used to give the layout a floating look in the basement, as well as draw attention away from the benchwork and to the layout. "CTC Green" will be used on the fascia and valance. By: James McNab

The main punches thru the backdrop at the one divider on the layout between the staging/fiddle yard and the modeled portion. I'll extend the scenery beyond the hole to help ease the transition. By: James McNab

A large return duct runs along the northeast corner of the layout, limiting clearance for lighting. Originally I didn't plan for lighting under the duct, hoping that the rest of the layout lighting would fill the gap. This as viewed shot shows the result. UNACCEPTABLE!!! By: James McNab

Same exposure, same aperture shot showing the new lighting under the duct. The entire layout now has a consistent, evenly-lit look. By: James McNab

Inexpensive T5 under-cabinet lights were strung together to a 1x4 bracket attached to the duct. I'll finish the valance with hardboard and trim. By: James McNab

The signature scene on the layout, the Hickman Road underpass, continues to develop. The center pier has been installed and both it and the abutments have been stained and colored. A quick photo backdrop was dropped in place to check for perspective issues. By: James McNab
|
The pier and abutments were stained using a wash made from inexpensive acrylic paints. More weathering will complete them. The bridge is scheduled to receive additional details, including safety rails and support brackets, before painting and weathering. By: James McNab

A low angle shot showing the photo of Hickman Road beyond the bridge. I took the shot standing directly north of the bridge pier to get the angle right. The jury is still out on the photo backdrops but they sure add depth to a scene. By: James McNab
