Notes:
- Between June and October 2004, 628 underwent extended work in the Council Bluffs shop, including being fitted with a four-stack exhaust (like IAIS 601), new cab doors and other body work, and new paint from the cab forward.
- 628 arrived on the railroad painted in the phase III scheme, but was repainted from the cab forward in October 2004 with the solid yellow nose and logo, essentially making it into the first phase IV-painted unit. It is unique amoungst phase IV-painted units in that it retained its white sill stripe.
- Speculation is that 628 was kept out of the initial sale to Grainbelt/Farmrail (GNBC) to potentially become a slug mother to a slug made out of IAIS 481. The slug was never built, and 628 subsequently sold.
